When you’re not friends with someone on Facebook, but they have sent you a message, your messages are considered ‘message requests.’ To view your message requests, open the Facebook Messenger app and tap the three lines in the top left corner. Scroll down and tap ‘Message Requests.’ You can view all of your message requests, including messages from people who aren’t friends with you on Facebook. If you see a message from someone you don’t know, you can choose to ignore it, report it as spam, or add the person as a friend.
